Tekkub
Who is Tekkub?
I’m a whiny, lazy, hermit of a programmer that lives on a “mountain” in Golden, CO. I run GitHub’s tech support and do some Ruby on Rails programming on the side. I also have a *small* collection of World of Warcraft addons I’ve written over the years. I live with my partner of 10 years and two cats, none of whom ever provide useful advice and always want me to buy them food and fancy toys. However, they make up for these shortcomings by being warm and fuzzy.
Where and when did you start programming?
TI-86 BASIC, in high school. I still own the calculator too… ye gods there are still programs on this thing.
What does your typical day look like?
Sleep as much as I can, get up around noon or so. Filter through GitHub’s support inbox, fix the quick easy tickets and delete the spam. Bitch a bunch on campfire, generally try to avoid doing anything productive. Eventually give in and try to clear out the inbox. Bitch some more, realize no one cares, dive into the code and fix the issue myself.
What do you do in your free time?
I do enjoy watching scifi and anime. I play WoW from time to time with a friend, but I usually end up spending more time writing addons for it than playing. I get bored if I have no one to play with, then the OCD kicks in and I have to fix things in the interface that are clearly broken or incorrect.
Current favorite apps?
I don’t think I have a “favorite” really, but every day I use Chrome, Textmate, GitX, Echofon, Propane, Limechat, Adium and Moneywell. Oh and “LineIn” to route my iPod to my speakers. Why the hell isn’t that in the sound settings like it is on Winders?
What OS do you prefer?
I guess I’m a mac convert. I really had no issues with Windows for day to day stuff, but when it comes to programming the command line is just… shit. I probably would have never given linux or OSX a serious go if the command line hadn’t driven me to it.
Small picture for your Workplace?
Apologies for the shitty camera pic, I suck at photos
Favorite: Language, JS Framework?
Lua is a great, fast little language (I use it for WoW addons of course). Obviously I use Ruby for work, and I enjoy it.
JQuery. I never knew javascript could bo so much fun. Especially after fighting with Prototype for a year or so.
Name something that has inspired you recently?
Bacon. Bacon is an inspiration every single day.
What do you prefer (and why)? Freelance work or full time employment?
Hard to pick. FT is great to have the consistant pay, but if it’s not a job you totally love you will always hit a point where it’s not enjoyable. It’s always downhill from there. Freelance is great, but you have to deal with finding and managing clients, which can have the same effect of making you hate your work. Maybe a healthy mix of the two?
What are your personal projects and goals for 2010?
Man, I don’t know there. I suck at setting goals. Pay down my student loan to clean up my credit, then start looking at buying a house. Project wise, well there’s a new expansion of WoW on the horizon, and I’m in the beta currently. I want completely rewrite the guides in my TourGuide addon. I’ve also been tinkering with a ruby script to relist auctions using the new web-based auction house. I’d love to write some apps for my Nexus One, but I’ve come to realize that I hate static-typed languages like java with a passion. I’m hoping Duby/Mirah will work out to be a really kickass language for that.
