Six Revisions

Who’s Jacob?

Jacob is a web developer/designer and Founder of two design/development related web properties: Six Revisions and Design Instruct.

Do you have a Brand?

Currently, I wouldn’t say I have a strong brand. But I’ve teamed up with my brother, Isaac Gube (who’s a graphic designer/illustrator and Chief Editor of Design Instruct) to establish a singular brand. It’s in the works, but unfortunately, we can’t share much more than that for now.

How do you choose the idea and the colors in any new project?

That’s a complicated question that requires a very lengthy response, but I’ll try to answer it as succinctly as I can. The biggest thing is to find out what the objective of the design is. The difference between “Design” and “Art” is that design needs to be purpose-driven.

You don’t create designs for the sake of design. So, I begin by defining the purpose of the design, and then work from there. Colors are related to the purpose of the design, so choosing a color theme is a combination of “what is the viewer supposed to feel?” and “what message do I want the viewer to take away from looking at this design?”

What does your typical day look like?

It starts early, between 5:00 and 6:30AM. I get a pot of coffee brewing, and while that’s doing its thing, I’ll be checking emails and reading my RSS feeds. Once I’ve gotten 1 cup of coffee in my blood stream, then it’s straight up working until around 7 or 8 at night.

What are the tools you couldn’t live without?

I couldn’t live without my Moleskine. It serves as my ideas catcher, planner, to-do list holder, wallet, coupon holder, note-taking, etc.

What do you do in your free time?

What free time? :)

Current favorite apps?

Favorite app at this moment: Dropbox.

What OSs do you prefer?

I’ve always been a Windows user.

Small pic for your Wokrplace?

Favorite: Colors, Font, Languages (PHP, Ruby), JS Framework?

  • Colors: #000 and #982907.
  • Font: Rockwell.
  • Server-side language: PHP.
  • JS framework: MooTools.

The things or source that inspired you?

My RSS feeds provide plenty of design inspiration.

What’s do you prefer, the freelance work or the full time employee?

I have no preference; they both have equal up’s and down’s.

Your personnel projects and goals for 2010?

Personal project that I’m working on right now is an icon set. I’ve become very rusty with Adobe Illustrator, and this personal project serves to shake out the cobwebs. I’m trying to design 1 vector icon per week, and then releasing it on Design Instruct sometime in the next decade.

My personal goal is to take Six Revisions and Design Instruct to the next level.

Always interesting to see into the mind of another developer/blogger. Good to another Windows user being so successful too!
