Who is Ola Bini?

Ola Bini is a Swedish developer with a large interest in programming languages. He spends most of his time focusing specifically on languages such as Java, Ruby and his own languages.

Where and when did you start programming?

When I was 7 years old, I started programming in Basic on my fathers Apple IIc. This was outside of Gothenburg in Sweden.

Tell us something about your book  JRuby on Rails?

Well. The book Practical JRuby on Rails is a book that tries to show you how to use JRuby to create applications. It is a bit dated at this point, since it was written almost three years ago.

What does your typical day look like?

I couldn’t say. At least three days a week a typical day involves airports. I spend lots of time on client sites, doing actual programming for customers.

What do you do in your free time?

Free time??? What is that? =)
I spend time with my wife, I try to play the guitar and sing a bit when I don’t sit in front of my computer.

Current favorite apps?

Emacs.

What OS do you prefer?

Linux on moral and ethical grounds, but Mac OS X on practical and pragmatic grounds – which means OS X is what I use day to day.

Small picture for your Workplace?

I don’t really have a workplace.

Favorite: Color, Font, Language, JS Framework?

Color: Black/Red, Font: No idea, Language: It varies, most of the time Ioke or Seph (my own languages), JS Framework: CoffeeScript

Name something that has inspired you recently?

Not sure if anything has inspired me more than anything else lately. Sorry. =)

What do you prefer (and why)? Freelance work or full time employment?

You can’t really compare them. Every full time employment is different based on who your employer is. I am very happy being a full time ThoughtWorks employee, but I don’t think I would be happy with any other full time or free lance situation.

What are your personal projects and goals for 2010?

Finishing Seph seems like the major goal for me during the rest of 2010.
