Chris Coyier
Who is Chris Coyier ?
I’m just some guy.
Do you have a personal Brand?
Nope.
How do you find design inspiration and colours for a new project?
I really like Colourlovers - It usually takes me just a few minutes on that site to leave inspired.
What does your typical day look like?
Well things are kind of in-flux as I’m starting a new job Wufoo, but I’m sure it will be much like my traditional schedule. I get up and work for the job all day, that’s the top priority. On my off hours I do all kinds of different stuff. I have a blog about web design. I wrote a book about WordPress. Those things were offshoots of the things I learned in day to day work as a web designer. I am lucky enough to work from home, so that’s kind of awesome. I like how relaxed and freeing that is.
What do you do in your free time?
I play some acoustic instruments. I try and get in some playing/practicing time with that everyday, although unfortunately I’m not playing with any groups at the moment. I also like normal dude stuff: movies, TV, food, sports, friends, family…
Current favorite apps?
I just switched calendar applications to BusyCal and I think that’s pretty awesome. Anything that syncs with the cloud and does a good job of it gets a gold star from me. I love Dropbox, Skitch, NetNewsWire, Things, and of course Wufoo.
What OS do you prefer?
OS X.
Small picture for your Workplace?
It’s a cheap plastic table with a computer on it. Nothing fancy. I do aspire to someday have an awesome inspiring workspace like the loft of an old grain mill or something, but I don’t think it’s vital to do good work or anything like that.
Favorite: Color, Font, Language, JS Framework?
I don’t have a favorite color or font really. I like colors and fonts that look great in the application they are being used in. I still like writing CSS. I wish I wrote more of it. As far as JavaScript frameworks, clearly, jQuery! World domination of jQuery has been complete for a few years now I think =)
Name something that has inspired you recently?
I just spent a week camping in the blueridge mountains as I do every year, at a bluegrass festival. It’s a completely unplugged experience and it’s always extremely refreshing and inspiring. I was sitting under a shade tent there and watching the leaves of a tree through it and it was creating some amazing patterns that I’d like to try and replicate in design someday.
What do you prefer (and why)? Freelance work or full time employment?
I don’t freelance at all. I find it too stressful in general. Even casual / small-time / friends and family clients I find stressful, although I try and do enough of it to stay in the game. I would never even consider trying to go off on my own completely freelance. I’m lucky enough that if I wanted to do the “on my own” thing someday in the future I could probably find other ways to make money without direct client work.
What are your personnel projects and goals for 2010?
I should probably think harder about that. I really don’t have any very specific tangible goals for this year. I want to make the most out of my new job at Wufoo and hopefully do a awesome things with that awesome team. Beyond that, I don’t have any specific professional goals. Being healthier, that would be good.
